Owner Alemtsehay Adnew of Sun World Sun MarketMy name is Alemtsehay Adnew, the owner of Sun World Sun Market. I was born in Dessie, Ethiopia where my mother taught me how to cook and inspired my love of food and feeding others at a young age. I’ve now been living in this beautiful country for 6 years, and in addition to running my market business, I work two jobs to support myself and my three children. After having the good fortune of meeting Chris, the Executive Director of Dreaming Out Loud, Sun World Sun Market has begun selling authentic Ethiopian food and imports including clothes and jewelry at the Southwest DC Farmer’s Market.

I was so happy to meet Chris and his mother last June at the Aya market. They are such kind and helpful people who took a real interest in my business ideas. I had begun selling some food and wares at the market, but not at the scale I dreamed of. Chris checked in with me often, and earlier this year when I shared with him my dreams of expanding my business operations but my financial inability to do so, he told me about the DREAM program. Through the DREAM program, I was able to apply for and obtain a Kiva loan of $2,500. With the help of DOL and many kind Kiva lenders, I’ve now received my loan to purchase the supplies and products needed to really launch my business in full force and have a strong presence at the SW market. I never expected people to understand my business idea and support me in such a way, and I am so grateful for my partnership with DOL.

Sun World Sun Market stall at Southwest Community MarketThrough this partnership, I will be able to grow my business and change my life and the lives of my children. With an increasingly growing business at the Southwest Market, I hope to soon work only one other job and dedicate more time to running Sun World Sun Market. Being able to dedicate more time to my business and one “day job” will give me more financial freedom, and also more time with my family, who often help me prepare for market days.

I am proud and grateful that I have been able to follow my dream and start this business. DOL’s DREAM program has helped me take my business to the next level and truly demonstrate to myself what I and my business are capable of! I look forward to what’s ahead for Sun World Sun Market!
