Our Framework for Action
Community economic development
- We will work to create meaningful community economic development via the food system.
- We will leverage community agricultural knowledge, the unique expertise of our project partners, and best practices to impact community.
Healthy Food Access
- We will work to improve access to culturally appropriate, fresh, and healthy food deep within communities.
- We will utilize the urban agriculture and the food system as a grassroots community organizing tool.
The Kelly Miller Farm is part of the DPR partner urban farm program where DPR works with local nonprofits to create urban farms focus on increasing the production and access of healthy food in local communities along with increasing free public programming. DPR has attained the funds from DOEE to build this farm and will be working closely with all the partners to create this farm into a self-sustaining community project.
Hustlerz 2 Harvesters
Hustlerz 2 Harvesters was founded by two lifelong DC residents and former residents of Clay Terrace in order to promote wellness, self-responsibility, and the prevention of illnesses and economic empowerment through agriculture. We leverage our neighborhood relationships to lead outreach to surrounding communities about planning, programs, and opportunities for education empowerment related to Kelly Miller.
City Blossoms is a nonprofit dedicated to fostering healthy communities by developing creative, kid-driven green spaces and innovative resources. We will work with community members and partners to develop and sustain Community Green Spaces, as well as support youth development and youth entrepreneurship.
Beet Street Gardens cultivates gardens and gardeners in partnership with organizations that have long-standing relationships working in communities facing significant barriers to safe, peaceful outdoor space, and healthy, affordable food. BSG will provide people power for farm production and pollination/cut-flower garden, and support workforce opportunities for those facing greater barriers to employment.
As the food service provider for 12 DC Public Schools, including Kelly Miller Middle School, DC Central Kitchen will use produce grown on the farm for the organization’s popular Fresh Feature Friday student taste testing initiative and in-school cooking lessons. DCCK will continue to combine nutrition education with its award-winning, locally-sourced, healthy school meals to help students become more familiar with and increase consumption of healthy food.
FoodCorps connects kids to healthy food in school, so they can lead healthier lives and reach their full potential. Dreaming Out Loud was selected as a partner organization to host a service member working at Kelly Miller Middle School. Our service member works to develop farm-to-school education programming, nutrition education, gardening, and more.
